The Dark Side of Compromise

The Dark Side of Compromise

Passage: Luke 23:1-25

Preacher: Dr. Steve Brown

Series: The Last 24

Detail:

Matthew 27:1-26

There are some things you must never compromise because the cost is just too great.

There is a difference between the willingness in principle to compromise [which is fine] and the willingness to compromise on principle [which is not].

I. Compromise Is Wrong If It Causes You To Defy Your Convictions.

Matt. 27:1-2

"Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor."

Luke 23:2

"And they began to accuse Him, saying, 'We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.'"

Matt. 27:11

"Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, 'Are You the King of the Jews?' And Jesus said to him, 'It is as you say.'"

Luke 23:4

"I find no guilt in this man."

Luke 23:14-15

"I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him…nor has Herod."

Luke 23:22

"I have found in Him no guilt demanding death."

II. Compromise Is Wrong If You Must Deny Your Conscience.

Matt. 27:22

"Pilate said to them, 'Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?'"

John 18:29-30

"Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, 'What accusation do you bring against this Man?' They answered and said to him, 'If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.'"

Matt. 27:19

"While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, 'Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.'"

III.   Compromise Is Wrong If You Must Defile Your Character.

John 19:12

"As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, 'If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.'"

Matt. 27:15

"Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the people any one prisoner whom they wanted."

Matt. 27:16

"At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas."

Matt. 27:17, 20-21

"So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

"But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.  But the governor said to them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release for you?' And they said, 'Barabbas.'"

Matt. 27:22

"'What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?' Pilate asked."

Matt. 27:24-26

"When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd.  'I am innocent of this man's blood,' he said. 'It is your responsibility!' All the people answered, 'Let his blood be on us and on our children!' Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified."

Matt. 15:15

"Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified."

Character is determined by the courage of your convictions.
